Barry Faske
Barry Loren Faske, 70, a second-generation native Floridian, died at his home on May 10, 2022, surrounded by his loving wife, Dr. Jacqueline Shellow, and sister, Dr. Ivy Faske.
Barry’s family emigrated from Romania to Florida in the late 1800s. His grandparents were one of the first Jewish families to establish roots in south Florida, settling in Miami in 1910. Barry’s uncle, Judge Sidney Segall, was the second boy to have a Bar Mitzvah in Dade County. His mother, Judge Adele Segall Faske, was, in 1953, appointed the first female Assistant State Attorney in Florida.
Barry was the twin brother of Garry Faske, who died in 2005. Both Faske brothers were Eagle Scouts and had achieved the prestigious Order of the Arrow, which recognizes Scouts who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives.
He graduated with honors from the University of Florida, with a degree in Accounting and Wildlife Ecology, and played an active role in seeking to create a better environment for future generations here in Florida for many years. In 2015, Barry was appointed by the Broward County Commission to its Climate Change Task Force where he served until 2019. He served as president of the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC), the leading certifier of green projects in the state, from 2018-2019.
In addition to his work with the FGBC he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Hollywood, Florida Chamber of Commerce, elected to the Chamber’s Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired Leadership Hollywood’s Environmental Day for eight years, and received the 2019 Leadership Hollywood Award for his dedication to the community.
He also wanted to serve his local community in other ways, formerly running for Hollywood City Commission, when he was honored to receive so much community support, and was currently a candidate for State Representative in House District 101.
Along with his wife and sister, he is survived by his three loving nephews, Robert, Ryan and Ross Shellow.
Funeral service will be held 11:00am Thursday, May 12 at Temple Sinai of Hollywood, followed by interment in the family plot at Mt. Nebo Miami Cemetery. Shiva will follow at 5:00pm at Temple Sinai. Funeral and graveside services are also available on Zoom.
